Book Blitz Cubbyhole Kid by C.E. Joseph

Teen / YA Biography, Memoirs
Date Published: November 2019
Publisher: Page Publishing

 photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

Cubbyhole Kid is a heartrending true story of dysfunction and abuse in a California family in mid-1960s.

It tells the harrowing survival story of a young four-year-old boy as he recounts his days being raised in a strict Irish Catholic family while expressing his gratitude and love for two incredible women that saved his life—his protective fourteen-year-old sister, his godmother, and his beautiful, religious mother. Together, along with his other siblings, his brothers, they painfully navigated their abusive, alcoholic, ex-military father through the mid-1960s, Los Angeles. While dealing with a severe childhood anxiety, suicidal depression, physical and learning disabilities at such a young age, the boy traveled inside the cubbyhole, a small, two-by-four middle section of the family station wagon, unexpectedly experiencing his World War II veteran father’s life-threatening road rage.

With the fear of death always looming, the boy witnessed his father’s all too familiar, unpredictable violence, explosive temperament, and heavy drinking during our country’s escalating involvement in the Vietnam War, the hippie cultural movement, riots in the streets, and arguably the heyday of rock-and-roll music.

The story describes the boy’s fond memories and relationship with his older sister, who bravely kept him shielded from their father’s harsh punishments and became like a second mother to him. While he experienced the beauty of life outside the home during his sister’s “coming-of-age” teenage years, along with her friends who were part of the youth cultural shift that seemingly took place overnight. The nightly demonstration of violence and abuse, coupled with his father’s unwillingness to accept the generational changes taking place with society’s youth, and his mother’s unexpected illness, would seem too much and test the young boy’s faith.

Marcie Horton has a sixth sense. Not in the “I see dead people” way, but . . . well, maybe a little. She feels a sort of knowing about certain things that can’t be explained—an intuition that goes beyond the normal. Then there was that one summer four years ago, when she connected with a long-departed spirit . . . But nothing that incredible has happened to Marcie since.

This summer, Marcie is spending time working at Angel Mounds, the archeological dig her mother heads, along with her brother, Eric, and his girlfriend, Renee. The dig is the site of an ancient indigenous civilization, and things immediately shift into the paranormal when Marcie and her dig teammates meet Lorraine and Zeke. The two mysterious dig assistants reveal their abilities to access the Universal Energy Field with their minds—something Marcie knows only vaguely that her brother has also had experience with. Marcie learns how our planet will disintegrate if action is not taken, and she and her team must decide if they are brave enough to help Lorraine and Zeke in their plan to save Mother Earth, her resources, and her history.

It looks like the summer just got a lot more interesting.

About the Author

Tracy wasn’t always a writer, but she was always a reader. Her favorite book growing up was A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle. In a weird way, her life reflects the book through odd synchronicities. She has a degree in Biology like Mrs. Murry and without realizing it she named her children Alex and Katie after Meg’s parents. (Really, it was not intentional, because that would be weird)! Tracy uses her science background in her writing through her emphasis on environmental issues and metaphysics. Growing up, Tracy’s younger brothers called her ‘sarge’ and once when she took a personality test for a job, the evaluator said she could give a Drill Sargent a run for his money. If you need someone to boss your around, Tracy’s your gal! Tracy lives in Indianapolis.

Excerpt

The tip of the alchemist’s nose hovered perilously close to the surface of the bubbling, frothing liquid that filled the large black cauldron hanging on the hook over the fire in the enormous hearth. His apprentice flinched, fearing that the boiling fluid might bubble up and burn his master’s nose, or that such close proximity to the terrible stench that suffused the steam coming off of it might make him faint.

Neither of these things would be good for the apprentice because the alchemist was known for his extreme fits of melancholy. Any setback could send the master into a depression that could last for weeks, and to have something go wrong at this late stage, with this particular experiment…

The apprentice shuddered to think of the depression such a thing would cause the alchemist, which would then mean weeks, perhaps months of inactivity, delaying his own promotion to journeyman and thus, eventually, to master alchemist in his own right.

Today, however, was different, because the alchemist was close to success. His mood was almost ebullient as he inhaled deeply of the noxious stuff, closing his eyes as though savoring the terrible stench.

“Ah, that’s it,” sighed the alchemist. He looked up from the cauldron. “Or, nearly so. A bit more hellebore, I think, and a pinch of nightshade.” He held out his hand impatiently. “Hurry, Marcello, hurry,” he said as the apprentice scurried to fetch the necessary items. “Timing is everything with such things.”

Marcello gathered the hellebore and the nightshade and placed the requisite amounts in his master’s outstretched hand. The master immediately tossed the stuff into the cauldron and pushed his nose close to sniff the concoction once more.

“This is it, it is perfect!” he exclaimed. He turned bright eyes to his apprentice. “Do you realize, Marcello, what this means for us? In just a few moments, we can be anywhere in the world. Anywhere at all! The very stuff of time and place will be ours for the manipulating!”

If you want to increase team productivity, relieve stress, and be happier at work, you could hire a bunch of workplace consultants, invest in scream therapy, and put Pharrell Williams on repeat—or you could just read Humor That Works.

Written by Andrew Tarvin, the world’s first Humor Engineer, this a business book on humor. No, that’s not an oxymoron. It really is a business book and it really is about getting better results by having more fun. Because people who use humor in the workplace are more productive, less stressed, and happier. No joke; sources included.

The goal is not to make you funnier—though that may be a side effect—but to make you effective-er. You’ll learn to develop a personal humor habit that’s not about spitting wisecracks or telling the funniest stories, but a way of seeing work in an energizing new way. You’ll build on some of the most important business skills for today’s work environment, develop techniques for leveraging humor, and take action to improve your work immediately. And you’ll have fun doing it.

Thrust into extraordinary circumstances, they race against time to stay alive as they are pursued by an age-old adversary and the world around them collapses into annihilation.

Under sacred oath, The Guardians—a far more archaic and enigmatic secret society than the Freemasons, Templars, and the Priory—protect Avery as she embarks on a daring quest that only legends of old have been on before. Avery must come to terms with the shocking realization that the blood of an ancient queen flows through her veins and that the fate of the world now rests on her shoulders.
